From Port Commander to Customs General: Onyeka Bows Out of TinCan with Record of ₦1.6 Trillion Revenue

The former Customs Area Controller of Nigeria Customs Service Tin Can Island Port Command, Assistant Comptroller-General Frank Onyeka, has formally handed over the leadership of the Command following his promotion to the rank of Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs.
Speaking during the handover ceremony held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Tin Can Island Port Command in Lagos, Onyeka described his tenure as one of the most fulfilling periods of his career in the Nigeria Customs Service.
He expressed gratitude to Almighty God, the leadership of the Service, officers, stakeholders, and members of the trading community for their unwavering support throughout his stewardship.
Reflecting on his achievements, the newly promoted ACG disclosed that the Command generated a total revenue of ₦1.609 trillion in the 2025 fiscal year, surpassing its target of ₦1.524 trillion. He further revealed that the Command recorded ₦401.01 billion revenue in the first quarter of 2026.
According to him, the remarkable revenue performance was driven by discipline, intelligence-led operations, improved compliance strategies, stakeholder engagement, and the deployment of modern trade facilitation mechanisms aimed at balancing enforcement with legitimate trade.
In the area of anti-smuggling operations, Onyeka said the Command recorded major breakthroughs through the interception of illicit drugs and prohibited items with a street value exceeding ₦35 billion.
He noted that the seizures reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to protecting national security and combating transnational organised crime.
The former Controller also highlighted the Command’s extensive engagement with freight forwarders, terminal operators, shipping companies, importers, exporters, and other stakeholders, which he said improved operational efficiency, dispute resolution, and compliance within the port system.
On human capital development, Onyeka stated that the Command invested significantly in training programmes, workshops, and professional development initiatives aimed at improving the competence and morale of officers and men of the Command.
He equally acknowledged the support given to the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), stressing that the association’s humanitarian and family-oriented programmes contributed positively to the welfare of officers and their families.
Onyeka expressed profound appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his visionary leadership, confidence, and support throughout his tenure.
He also commended the management team, officers, and men of the Tin Can Island Port Command for their loyalty, professionalism, and commitment, noting that every success recorded during his administration was achieved through teamwork and collective dedication.
Handing over to Comptroller Joe Anani, Onyeka urged stakeholders and officers to extend the same cooperation and support to the new leadership to ensure continuity and greater achievements for the Command.
He assured that despite his new responsibilities as an Assistant Comptroller-General, Tin Can Island Port Command would always remain close to his heart, pledging to remain available for guidance and support whenever necessary.
