Enforcement operations often resemble a theatre of conflict, even a battle field, demanding exceptional courage, resilience, and mental fortitude. Only valiant officers with the mental strength to face the roar of dreaded smugglers and drug barons without being paralysed with fear can tread on this path.

This implies that such officers must have unwavering resolve to confront the menace posed by hardened smugglers and drug traffickers without succumbing to fear.

Sometimes, in their steadfast commitment to safeguarding national security, these officers frequently make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, laying down their lives in service to their country.

It is common knowledge that
their role is both perilous and indispensable. While many citizens enjoy the safety and comfort of their homes, enforcement operatives remain on constant alert, patrolling highways, navigating dense forests, securing waterways, and the creeks.

Their vigilance is critical in protecting the nation’s economy from the activities of unscrupulous elements determined to smuggle prohibited and harmful goods into the country through the backdoor.

Thus, such dedication, bravery, and selflessness should not go unnoticed. These officers deserve not only commendation but enduring recognition for their gallantry and tenacious service to the nation.

Comptroller Gambo Aliyu Earns Distinguished Award for Excellence in Anti-smuggling

That was exactly the scenario at the 6th edition of the Town Hall Meeting, organised by JournalNG, on Friday, April 24, 2026, in Apapa, Lagos, where
Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, the Unit Controller, Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone ‘A’ of Nigeria Customs Service, was honoured.

It was a well-merited recognition, as Gambo Aliyu, an enforcement officer extraordinary, was bestowed with
the ‘Distinguished Service Award for Excellence in Anti-Smuggling Operations’ an accolade that is a testament to his exceptional contributions to enforcement and national economic protection.

Taking into cognisance his track record in enforcement operations over the years, this distinction is widely regarded as richly deserved, reflecting the career of a consummate enforcement strategist whose professional trajectory spans critical Customs formations, including seaports, border commands, and the Federal Operations Unit across multiple States in the South-West.

In each posting, Comptroller Aliyu has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to operational excellence, leaving an indelible imprint of discipline, precision, and effectiveness.

Renowned for his forensic approach to enforcement, Gambo Aliyu’s expertise in detecting concealed contraband, whether at maritime gateways, land borders, or within difficult creek terrains, has positioned him as a formidable figure in anti-smuggling operations.

His deep institutional knowledge and instinctive grasp of enforcement dynamics have consistently yielded tangible results.

His impressive track record dates back to his early years in service, through his tenure as Deputy Comptroller of Enforcement at TinCan Island Port Command, and later as Area Controller of Oyo/Osun Command.

At every stage, he has distinguished himself through strategic leadership, operational intelligence, and a resolute dedication to duty.

More than a routine recognition, the Award serves as a clear signal to criminal networks that Comptroller Gambo Aliyu is not merely an enforcement officer, but a highly perceptive and deliberate operator, a Customs officer whose vigilance and expertise continue to redefine standards in anti-smuggling enforcement.

For instance, within a short period on the saddle, as Unit Controller of FOU Zone ‘A’, he has successfully taken out over 4,700 parcels of dangerous drugs from circulation in the system.

Also, he seized large quantities of compressed cannabis sativa weighing more than 2.174 tons, through intelligence-driven operations, therefore drawing the battle line against the daredevil smugglers sabotaging the economy in the South-West.
